Born in Dundee in 1907, he studied at Glasgow School of Art. In 1926 at the age of only 19 he exhibited at the Royal Academy and thereafter a constant exhibitor in all principal U.K. exhibitions.
In 1957 he was elected Royal Scottish Academician and in 1973 he was granted an Honorary Doctorate of Law by the University of Dundee.
His earliest golf paintings were produced during the 1930’s with the golfing portrait of Willie Auchterlonie regarded as the finest example of this aspect of his work. The original painting hangs in the clubhouse of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews.
